1.Overview of the 1756-ESMCAP Allen-Bradley

The 1756-ESMCAP is a capacitor-based Energy Storage Module (ESM) for the ControlLogix 5570/5580 series controllers from Allen-Bradley, a Rockwell Automation company. It replaces traditional lithium batteries, providing controller holdover energy during power outages and ensuring that programs and safety data are fully written to non-volatile memory (NVS), enabling a "battery-free" maintenance solution. As a key component of the Rockwell Automation Integrated Architecture system, the 1756-ESMCAP module enables engineers to build larger, more complex safety solutions without being limited by the standard memory on the controller motherboard.

Installation and Maintenance Tips
When powering on for the first time, wait until the CHRG light turns off to ensure the capacitor is fully charged.
Before disassembly, the controller's OK light must turn from green to red to completely off. Failure to do so may result in program loss.
The module is not field repairable. In the event of a failure, the entire module must be replaced and disposed of as electronic waste.


Typical Applications
Process control, packaging, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and other downtime-sensitive applications; Remote stations, offshore platforms, and cleanrooms where battery transportation is restricted or "zero maintenance" is required.
Combined with 5580 controllers such as the 1756-L81E, L83E, and L85E, this module can be used to implement redundant or standalone high-availability systems.


Program and Data Backup: The 1756-ESMCAP is a capacitor-based energy storage module. Its primary function is to provide temporary power to the 1756-L7x controller immediately after a chassis power outage or when the controller is removed from a powered chassis. This brief power supply is sufficient to securely save the controller's program and data to its onboard non-volatile memory, effectively preventing program loss.

Integrated Design: It's important to note that the ControlLogix 5570 (L7 series) controller does not include a battery; the 1756-ESMCAP module is a backup power solution included as standard.
